Care Providers

Case Study 1

A specialist learning disabilities provider asked me to review the contracts that they have in place. They commission with many different commissioners and needed to check for recurring compliance issues between them.

This process has led to a full-scale review of all the organisation’s placements, looking at the historical fee summary per client.  I enabled the provider to gather substantial evidence. Through extensive communication with commissioners, the organisation has now achieved increases in their fee income.  My input has also highlighted a number of key issues within the provider’s processes and the contracts that they work to.

Case Study 2

As part of our MBA final project, I was part of a small team who undertook a consultancy project with a large distribution company.  The problem we were faced with was looking at was whether the company needed to expand to increase its revenue.  Through a series of interviews, I was able to identify a number of process issues which were seriously affecting the companies cash flow and financial reporting.  Within 4 weeks, debtor days reduced from over 45 days back to the contracted 28 days and we were able to tighten the payment system through implementing changes to the payment terms.

Public Sector

Case Study 1

I carried out a major change project within the learning disabilities service for a local council.  As a way of tackling overspend and improving the cost controls in place, a form was introduced for every financial change within the service.  The data gained from this 6-page form was analysed through Excel over a period of two years. This insight demonstrated and evidenced the major demographic factors, creating well-informed changes to the budget.  It also helped to identify the major issues which would face the service over the next five years, allowing for a detailed financial plan to be written.  We were also able to use the detail to evidence and support a full market analysis of the service.

Case Study 2

As part of previous roles, I was finance manager for two specialist services with gross budgets of around £11m and £50m.  Both services had overspends and through extensive analysis of data, I enabled greater financial controls to be introduced and also enhanced budget management.

Professional Services

Case Study 1

As part of ongoing contract negotiations with commissioners, I worked very closely with an independent lawyer to review historical care placements. I acted as a “critical friend” in the approach taken and offered consultancy advice as required.  As a result of this, I have now been asked to review a particular element of NHS Funding and write a report on my findings.

Case Study 2

I was approached by a training company that had just been awarded a major project. They asked me to design a spreadsheet in Excel which allowed for all of the constraints of the project to be included.   This enabled the company to monitor the project effectively and apply “what if” scenarios to make suitable changes for the future.

Education and Training

Case Study 1

A leading university asked me to write a module for a new Finance and Economics degree course.  It started off as one module and I was then asked to write a further advanced module at short notice. As a result of carrying out extensive research to support the writing of these modules, I have developed two teaching sessions that I have been able to use already.  I completed an induction to teaching in 2017 and have delivered these sessions to a number of groups and will also be delivering sessions to a Masters Degree in Health and Social Care.

Case Study 2

I volunteer with the teenage market which is organised by BG University.  I am heavily involved in the organisation of the event but also work closely with the teenage entrepreneurs on the day, offering advice and support and helping them with their businesses in a mentoring role.
